Christmas Poem

Around the Bluhmin’ Town

By

Judy Bluhm

Hold back those reindeer. Unload that sleigh.

Take down the tree. That’s what I say.

Keep the roast in the freezer and the candles unlit.

Santa stay home. I don’t care one bit.

The unthinkable happened. Our loved-one is gone.

Take down the lights. Don’t sing a song.

Why celebrate when we feel sorrow and grief?

So, this Christmas Day had better be brief.

I will go to my church and sit in a pew

Asking God what it is I can possibly do.

So many people are reeling in pain

Searching for hope, waiting in vain.

Do not set the table with one person less.

The next time we smile is anyone’s guess.

My minister claims that Christmas goes on.

Well, I pointed out, this time he is wrong.

Then in an instant with a flash of white light

An angel appeared – a heavenly sight.

I was flooded with memories of all Christmases past,

From the first Christmas I remember to the one I had last.

We may lose our loved one; our sadness is real.

But with God’s grace and an angel, our hearts just might heal.

Go set the table. Thaw out the roast.

Don’t stop enjoying this day you loved most.

Believe in a miracle. Santa, go pack the sleigh.

Light all the candles and brighten the way.

Our tears and our sadness, Christ hears as a call,

To bring peace, joy and comfort to each and to all.

The angels are coming, preparing the way

To heal broken hearts on this holy day.

Grief may show up but won’t dim our light.

And it won’t stop our memories that will always shine bright.

Dear Readers, if you have an empty place at your table during the holidays, may the sweet memories of your loved one bring you comfort and joy.
